Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. – Martin Luther King Jr.
Alan Latham, a Birmingham-based attorney and fierce advocate for justice, embodies the belief that the courtroom is the ultimate battlefield to defend the people. “A trial lawyer stands as the first and final line of defense for those whose voices are silenced. I became a personal injury and consumer protection attorney to empower the ‘little people’—to ensure they have a relentless champion against corporations. While the law may recognize corporations as ‘persons,’ they lack what truly matters: a heart that beats and a conscience that feels,” says Latham.
Latham joined the Michigan Association for Justice (MAJ) in 2013 upon passing the bar and launching his career at a prominent personal injury firm. Early on, he recognized MAJ membership not as an option but as a necessity: a vital community of like-minded warriors who stand united, professionally and politically, to protect the public and fight for justice. “The MAJ is where trial lawyers forge unshakable alliances, share their expertise, and confront the most complex legal challenges as a collective force. We’re not just colleagues—we’re collaborators, helping evaluate cases, refer trusted business, and advance justice for all,” Latham explains.
As a MAJ Executive Board member and AAJ State Delegate, Latham’s firm doesn’t just participate—it leads. From sponsoring cornerstone events like the New Lawyers’ Oktoberfest and the MAJ Silent Auction to contributing to the Builder’s Circle Fund for improving MAJ’s new headquarters, Latham’s commitment runs deep. “I proudly contribute to Justice PAC because the truth is stark: political power and financial influence shape the law. If we, as trial lawyers, fail to act, we allow corporations to tip the scales against the people. The jury remains the greatest equalizer—a mechanism to hold powerful corporations accountable and promote safety, fairness, and better products. Our duty as trial lawyers is clear: we are the guardians of justice, and our collective political strength ensures the law serves the people.”
As Past MAJ President Harry M. Philo once said:
“The law is never settled until it is settled right; the law is never settled until it is just; and the law is not just until it serves society to the fullest.”
Latham’s journey began far from the courtroom—in the trenches of Chrysler Financial during the financial collapse. “That corporate experience solidified my purpose: to fight for those left behind, particularly against the unchecked power of the Big Three automakers, dealerships, and other entities that exploit consumers. It was clear to me that I would dedicate my life to leveling the playing field in both consumer protection and personal injury litigation.”
Today, Latham’s firm stands as a beacon of hope for clients often overlooked. “Our approach is simple but powerful: personal, thorough, and unwavering. We have an open-door policy with our clients, treating each case with the respect it deserves. We don’t shy away from challenges—we seek them. Where other firms see ‘losers,’ we see untold potential. We take rejected cases and turn them into victories, proving that with hard work and commitment, justice is not just possible—it’s inevitable.”
Alan Latham continues to fight for what’s right—because justice is not a privilege for the powerful, but a promise to us all.
